levels of curriculum
Learning
to read is a complex process. From the early stages of manipulating
sounds and recognizing letters to the fluent reading of classic
literature, children progress through a variety of stages
of reading competence. Based on a thorough understanding of
this progression of skills, Principle Woods provides engaging
stories that lead young children to become proficient readers.
Principle
Woods provides principle-based stories that encourage social
competence and reading success. Children learn universal principles
including honesty, courage and compassion. These character
traits are internalized as children interact with the lovable
characters that live in Principle Woods. Three distinct reading
levels are addressed through our books and corresponding curriculum.
The early literacy books are named Acorn Readers. The emerging
and transitional books are named Seedling Readers. The independent
reading level books are named Grand Oak Readers.
ACORN
CURRICULUM: This is an early literacy program that integrates
social and emotional skills with language arts skills. The
acorn reader program addresses the necessary foundation for
young children to read and write fluently, and to communicate
and collaborate effectively. The books are downloadable and
the teacher can make as many copies as necessary. Young children
feel ownership of these books because they belong to them
and they can color in the illustrations. Vocabulary and concept
development is an integral part of every acorn reader and
prosocial skills are woven into many stories providing students
with positive examples to follow. These books are for children
in pre-kindergarten first grade.
SEEDLING
CURRICULUM:
This is for the emerging and transitional reader. These students
are on their way to becoming independent readers. To assist
them in this process, the books are filled with beautiful
illustrations, short sentences and many high frequency words.
Young children feel much success as they read the adventures
of the lovable characters that live in Principle Woods. They
explore universal principles as they acquire the reading skills
they need to progress to the independent level of reading
success. These books are for children in second - third grades.
GRAND
OAK CURRICULUM: This
is for the independent reader who has mastered the mechanics
of reading. The print is smaller but the illustrations are
still abundant. Fantasy abounds as the lively characters encounter
one delightful dilemma after another and learn the virtues
necessary for living a principle-centered life. The colorful
imagery, vivid vocabulary and style provide a wonderful model
for writing extensions. These books are for children in forth-
fifth grades.
